“The first wealth is health.” – Emerson
Many old timers of Santa Fe remember Genoveva Chavez as the bella who for decades serenaded the crowd on the opening-day of Fiestas with her heart-felt canciones. Today however, some only know her name as the jewel community center of Santa Fe, a state-of-art facility known as the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.
Santa Fe obviously values health and fitness because this is truly one of the most impressive public recreation centers you will ever experience. This is a perfect spot for visitors who require daily regimented exercise or who want to treat their families to some concerted recreational activities.
The Genoveva Chavez Community Center has essentially all the facilities and equipment one can imagine and, considering it must have been fabulously expensive to create this beautiful community facility, it’s fabulously inexpensive to visit. The line to check in takes a hot minute, and after that, this place is your oyster. What do you want? Skating? Blades or wheels? Swimming? Waterpark slides, lazy river, hot tub or Olympic pool? Do you like to cycle or do you prefer to run the quarter-mile indoor track? Will it be racquetball or basketball today?
The upstairs area has a large collection of stationary bikes for spinning, and you can catch an affordable yoga class with one of Santa Fe’s gurus for $6.50. From Zumba to Pilates and beyond, the Chavez Center has it all. Check their website for more details about class schedules and events.
There is plenty of parking, and the Genoveva Chavez Community Center is conveniently located in south Santa Fe next to the rodeo grounds at 3221 Rodeo Road, Santa Fe, NM 87507; (505) 955.4000.
