It has been said that the label “pizzeria” is not adequate to describe the culinary experience awaiting you at Rooftop Pizzeria. Rooftop appears to have made it its mission to prove that the inventiveness for which Santa Fe’s chefs are renowned can extend to one of America’s favorite culinary obsessions – pizza.
The pizza choices are not the run-of-the-mill pepperoni and mushroom variety. Put together ingredients of your choosing to create your own pizza or try one of Rooftop’s sophisticated combinations. The kitchen here scores high marks for its rich and imaginative toppings. Consider the pie topped with lobster, shrimp, mushrooms, apple-smoked bacon, caramelized leeks, truffle oil, Alfredo sauce and four cheeses on a blue corn crust. You could opt for something more obvious yet obscure like the No. 5, the “BLT” – made with apple-smoked bacon, ripe tomato, mozzarella, provolone and bleu cheese topped with avocado and lettuce with red sauce on an artisan crust.
The No. 3 combo goes like this: grilled chicken, green chile, cotija and asadero cheeses and toasted piñon with Alfredo sauce on blue corn crust. Could this one be New Mexico’s very best pizza? “Food Network Magazine” thinks so, naming the No. 3 the Land of Enchantment’s very best!
Rooftop’s appealing antipasti selection is served with house-made breads as well as herb-infused oil. The menu includes five different salad options including a smoked duck salad with roasted peppers, pistachios and mixed greens doused with balsamic sesame vinaigrette. They also boast a lusty array of leafy creations and the soup of the day offers an alternative starter option.
Happiest are the hours between 4 - 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, when you can enjoy $7 wines by the glass from a selection of 20 different bottles, $3 for New Mexico’s best craft beers on tap, half-priced appetizers and 25 percent off their impressive selection of bottles of wine. Rooftop Pizzeria’s contemporary dining room takes you to San Francisco or New York, and the patio perches you in a position that lets you breathe in New Mexico’s restorative mountain air and gaze reverently at the incomparable blue skies. Look below for idyllic views of Water Street and nearby rooftops.
The Rooftop Pizzeria has a menu intriguing enough to warrant repeat visits. Don’t miss an opportunity to dine on the top of the roof, where the top pizza in New Mexico comes with a view.
