In the Santa Fe mall known as DeVargas Center at the main entrance between Baskin Robbins and CVS is a third-generation family restaurant, Atrisco Cafe and Bar, owned and managed by Santa Fe-mous visionary George Gundry.
Atrisco offers a small but carefully crafted selection of American dishes such as burgers with house-cut fries, Southwest chicken salad, and meat loaf, but Atrisco unmistakably offers a deep-rooted love of authentic New Mexican chile. Serving a menu replete with New Mexican favorites, Atrisco upgrades the experience with local organic meats and high-quality produce—the sopaipilla stuffed with roasted leg of lamb and smothered in red chile is highly recommended, as is the meat loaf with jalapeño-mashed potatoes.
Both the green and red chile are scrumptious, no matter what season, just picante enough for those who require flavor. There are many vegetarian options including a veggie enchilada. Both enchiladas and burritos are supreme, right down to the pinto beans and posole.
Delicious northern New Mexico lamb is available in many dishes. Atrisco’s margarita is perfection, and they have mastered two kinds of sangria, white and red, ambrosia mixed by demi-gods. An enviable dessert menu includes banana cream pie and natillas, and biscuits are among several breakfast must-haves. These are biscuits the way they should be made–light and flaky yet moist. Any Southern cook would be proud to serve these. If only they were open for breakfast every day and not just on the weekend…
For over 40 years, Mr. Gundry’s family has relied on simple recipes, quality ingredients, and friendly service, but his pedigree goes beyond working in family restaurants. As former director of the world-famous Santa Fe Farmers’ Market, he cultivated a wide network of local sources that today provide the organic produce and meats used in his restaurant. He is very often on site at Atrisco. With ambassadorial aplomb, he frequently checks up on his guests to ensure they are enjoying their dining experience.
Atrisco Café and Bar is by far the best homemade, fresh and flavorful meal you will have for the price. It’s a convenient dining stop if you need to pick up groceries, go to the pharmacy, or visit any other venue the DeVargas Center offers. Some will come and go, but Atrisco is here to stay. Check out their catering and party menu and let the Atrisco cater your next event!
